Supported Self-Development

The 3S Framework for Authentic Confidence in Allied Health

Are you supporting early career Allied Health Professionals on their journey to confidence and competence?

Or perhaps you're an early career therapist yourself, looking to find your footing?

We’ve created something to help with that.

The 3S Framework focuses on three key areas, each with its own essential elements, tailored for both early career therapists and those who support them:

Self

Vision and Values:

For Therapists: Understand why you’re in this profession and what you hope to achieve. Align your work with your core values and personal vision to ensure you’re making a meaningful impact in a way that resonates with you. This alignment is the foundation for long-term fulfilment and authentic confidence.

For Supporters: Help early career therapists clarify and articulate their vision and values. Create a workplace culture that aligns with these values, ensuring that their personal goals can be realised within your organisation. Encourage discussions about what they want to achieve and how the workplace can support those aspirations.

Self-Awareness:

For Therapists: Recognise your strengths and areas where you might need additional support. Being aware of your competencies helps you identify opportunities for growth and development. This insight allows you to seek out resources and mentorship to fill in the gaps and build on your existing skills.

For Supporters: Provide regular feedback that helps therapists develop self-awareness. Use performance reviews and one-to-one meetings to discuss strengths and areas for growth. Foster an environment where seeking help and acknowledging areas for development are seen as positive and proactive steps.

Self-Care:

For Therapists: Prioritise your health and well-being by setting boundaries, managing stress, and engaging in activities that recharge you. Self-care isn’t just about physical health; it also includes emotional and mental well-being. Ensuring you’re in a good place personally allows you to give your best professionally.

For Supporters: Promote a culture of self-care within your team. Encourage breaks, offer flexible working arrangements, and provide resources for managing stress and maintaining well-being. Lead by example, showing that taking care of oneself is key to long-term success and productivity.

Supports

Professional Supports:

For Therapists: Surround yourself with mentors, leaders, and peers who can provide guidance, feedback, and encouragement. Having experienced professionals to learn from and peers to collaborate with is crucial for navigating the challenges of early career development. As you grow, mentoring others can also reinforce your knowledge and confidence.

For Supporters: Establish a robust support network within your organisation. Pair early career therapists with experienced mentors and facilitate regular peer collaboration. Encourage a culture of shared learning where both giving and receiving mentorship are valued and supported.

Social Connection:

For Therapists: Build strong, supportive relationships both within and outside of your workplace. Social connection helps you feel part of a community, which is vital for maintaining motivation and resilience. Whether it’s through professional networks, workplace friendships, or personal relationships, staying connected is key to thriving.

For Supporters: Foster a sense of community within your team. Create opportunities for social interaction, both formal and informal, that cater to different personalities and preferences. Understand the social needs of your team members and make sure everyone feels connected and supported.

Environmental Supports:

For Therapists: Create an environment that supports your work and well-being. This includes not just your physical workspace, but also the sensory aspects that affect your focus and comfort. Additionally, managing your internal environment—your mindset and mental state—is crucial for maintaining cognitive bandwidth and emotional balance.

For Supporters: Design workspaces that are conducive to focus, comfort, and well-being. Consider the sensory and ergonomic needs of your staff. Support a positive mental environment by addressing stressors, providing access to mental health resources, and encouraging open communication about challenges.

Structures

Structured Reasoning:

For Therapists: Use structured reasoning tools to guide your clinical decision-making. This includes clear frameworks for assessing, planning, and evaluating your work. Having a reliable process in place helps you feel more confident in your decisions and ensures you’re providing the best possible care.

For Supporters: Provide access to and training in structured reasoning tools. Encourage the use of clinical frameworks and decision-making models. Ensure that your team has the resources they need to approach their work systematically and confidently.

Skilled Observation:

For Therapists: Develop your observation skills through reflective practices, mentoring, and feedback. Observing others and reflecting on your own practice are key to refining your skills. Whether through video review, shadowing, or in-session coaching, skilled observation helps you learn and improve continuously.

For Supporters: Create opportunities for observation and reflection. Facilitate shadowing experiences, in-session coaching, and video reviews. Encourage a culture of continuous learning where therapists feel safe to observe, reflect, and grow from their experiences.

Strategic Practice:

For Therapists: Engage in deliberate, mindful practice that focuses on skill development. Strategic practice involves setting goals, seeking feedback, and reflecting on your progress. Over time, this approach helps you build competence and confidence, moving from conscious effort to mastery in your work.

For Supporters: Encourage strategic practice by setting clear expectations for skill development and providing regular, constructive feedback. Offer structured opportunities for therapists to reflect on their work and make adjustments. Support their journey towards mastery by recognising and celebrating their progress.
